Abdominal Ultrasounds
Liver
The liver is an important organ that helps our body function properly. It can be affected by different diseases like hepatitis, diabetes, fatty liver, and damage from alcohol, drugs, and medications. Some signs that there may be a problem with the liver include dark urine, a swollen stomach, and feeling very tired because the body is not getting enough nutrients. We can check for any problems with the liver by looking for changes in its size, the presence of cysts or masses. However, just by feeling the liver, we cannot tell how damaged it is. We can only see if it is tender or if it is larger than normal.
Gallbladder
The gallbladder is a small organ below the liver that stores bile. Bile helps with digesting food when we eat. A gallbladder ultrasound is a test to find the cause of stomach pain. This pain could be from gallstones, inflammation of the gallbladder, or something blocking the bile ducts. The gallbladder releases bile into the small intestines to help with digestion. The ultrasound checks for things like lumps, gallstones, and abnormal sizes by measuring the gallbladder and its walls.
Pancreas
We check your body for any changes in size or shape, as well as any problems with the organs. The pancreas is an important organ that stores enzymes to help break down the food we eat. If the pancreas gets injured, it can be very harmful. The main causes of pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas, are alcohol and gallstones. Alpha and beta cells in the pancreas help regulate our blood sugar levels by releasing glucagon and insulin.
Spleen
We use ultrasound to look at your spleen and check its size, for any swelling, lumps, fluid, or masses. The spleen is important for things like red blood cells, fat processing, storing iron, and the immune system.
Kidneys
Ultrasound imaging is used to look for stones, shrinkage, blood flow, swelling in the kidney or ureter, fluid buildup, and masses. Diabetes can cause problems with small blood vessels and kidney function. The kidneys are organs shaped like beans that filter the blood. A renal ultrasound is done to check the size of the kidneys and find cysts, tumors, blockages, fluid buildup, kidney stones, and infections.
